Karan Patel, MD/MPH, DABR

Dr. Patel is a highly accomplished skilled interventional radiologist with over 15 years of experience in the field. Dr. Patel has dedicated his career to advancing minimally invasive procedures.  Dr. Patel is a board-certified radiologist and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Radiology. He is fellowship trained in Vascular and Interventional Radiology and is member of several prestigious professional organizations, such as Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) and the American College of Radiology (ACR). He also holds a Registered Physician in Vascular Interpretation (RPVI) certificate.

DEGREES
Dr. Patel earned his double major in Biology & Chemistry at Boston College. He then pursued MD/MPH at St. George’s University School of Medicine where he was a member of Iota Epsilon Alpha, their medical honor society.

RESIDENCY
Following medical school, Dr. Patel completed his surgical internship at University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Afterwards, he completed his Diagnostic Radiology residency at Wayne State University. During residency, Dr. Patel collaborated on numerous research projects which earned him plenty of accolades.  His work has been presented at many national meetings. He has won Radiology Society of North America (RSNA) Research Travel Award and authored multiple scientific abstracts that were selected as RSNA’s Top Rated Scientific Abstract for multiple years. Dr. Patel has won the ACR Rutherford-Lavanty Fellowship & ACR Radiology Leadership Institute Summit Scholarship – each a highly competitive award that is only handed to a few radiology residents in the entire country. He has managed to win them both!

FELLOWSHIP
After residency, Dr. Patel completed his Vascular & Interventional Radiology fellowship at University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) aka Shock Trauma Hospital. He attributes his interventional skills to having access to a large case volume with an extremely complex case mix. His diverse skill set includes treating complex peripheral vascular disease with strong focus on pedal revascularization interventions, women’s interventions to include treating fibroids and pelvic congestion disease, dialysis interventions, complex filter retrievals, oncology and hepatobiliary interventions, vertebral augmentation procedures and even super specialized endovascular cases such as adrenal vein sampling.

EXPERTISE
Dr. Patel is considered a foremost expert in adrenal vein sampling and has performed the most cases in the country. He routinely has patients flying from all over the world to get their procedures scheduled with him due to his high technical success rate and his unequivocal commitment to quality.  

LEADERSHIP
Dr. Patel has held many prominent leadership positions during his career. He is passionate about advocacy and has won the prestigious SIR Grassroots Leadership Program. He went onto Capitol Hill in Washington D.C and lobbied on behalf of SIR to help increase ACGME funding towards the new IR residency. He held successful congressional site visits at Wayne State University and sought co-sponsorships on numerous congressional bills that impacted the future of IR residency.  He was part of the SIR-RFS Governing Council and was Chair of the SIR-RFS Advocacy Committee.

PERSONAL LIFE
Beyond his professional achievements, Dr. Patel enjoys spending time with his family and friends. He loves to travel and try out new restaurants. He loves playing sports and is an avid tennis player.
